COX’S BAZAR, June 22, 2026:
A Rohingya refugee football team emerged as champions in the World Refugee Day Solidarity Football Tournament in Cox’s Bazar, defeating a team of humanitarian workers and government representatives 2-0 in the final.
Organised by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, together with BRAC and ActionAid, the tournament brought together Rohingya refugees, members of the host community, aid workers, and government officials to celebrate World Refugee Day through sport and solidarity.
The victorious Rohingya side represents the Arakan Rohingya Football Federation, a camp-based football network comprising players from all 33 refugee camps. Supporters from both the refugee camps and surrounding host communities celebrated their victory.
Speaking after the match, Rohingya team coach Emdad Ullah said football offers refugees hope and a temporary escape from the hardships of camp life. Team captain Aptar Hossain said the players were proud to represent the Rohingya community and expressed hope of one day returning safely to Myanmar and playing football in their homeland again.
UNHCR Representative in Bangladesh Ivo Freijsen praised the resilience of Rohingya refugees and acknowledged the continued generosity of the Government of Bangladesh and local host communities in supporting those displaced by conflict.
Held under this year’s World Refugee Day theme, “Until Everyone is Safe,” the tournament highlighted the role of sport in promoting inclusion, teamwork and mental well-being. Against the backdrop of the FIFA World Cup, the event also showcased the talent and determination of Rohingya youth while strengthening bonds between refugees, host communities and humanitarian partners.
As the final whistle blew, players from both teams celebrated together, reflecting the spirit of unity, dignity and hope.
