COX’S BAZAR, July 23, 2026:
Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Rohingya refugees and vulnerable host communities in Bangladesh as Minister of the Embassy of Japan to Bangladesh TAKAHASHI Naoki visited refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar and inaugurated a Japan-funded healthcare project.
During his wo-day visit on July 19–20, Minister TAKAHASHI inaugurated “The Project for the Improvement of the Facility and Medical Equipment at the Primary Healthcare Center” at Rohingya Camp 24 in Teknaf. The project, implemented by MedGlobal with support from Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP), is expected to provide essential healthcare services to around 40,000 community members, including approximately 17,000 patients annually.
The minister commended MedGlobal for its work and urged the organization to ensure the effective operation and maintenance of the facility for the long-term benefit of refugees and host communities.
Expressing condolences to the families affected by recent heavy monsoon rains in Cox’s Bazar, TAKAHASHI said Japan remained committed to strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities in and around the camps.
On the second day, he visited a UNHCR registration centre, a WFP food distribution centre, a UN Women-led market, an IOM-supported shelter site, a Japan-funded primary healthcare centre operated by Friendship, and a Save the Children learning centre supported through the Japan Platform.
Since 2017, Japan has contributed more than US$242 million to Rohingya humanitarian assistance in Cox’s Bazar. Japan also commended Bangladesh for hosting around 1.2 million Rohingya refugees and pledged continued support for resolving the crisis.
