Bangladesh Urges Stronger Humanitarian Action, Women’s Role in Peacebuilding at UN

New York, June 17:

Bangladesh has called for stronger global humanitarian action, enhanced protection for civilians, and greater participation of women in peacebuilding efforts as humanitarian crises continue to intensify worldwide.

Speaking at the 2026 Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs Segment at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to humanitarian principles and international cooperation.

She highlighted the government’s initiatives under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to expand social protection programmes, strengthen disaster preparedness, empower women, and support vulnerable communities.

Addressing the UN Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security, the State Minister underscored the vital role of women in conflict prevention and peacebuilding. She also praised the contributions of Bangladeshi women peacekeepers serving in United Nations peacekeeping missions across the world.

Expressing concern over the growing humanitarian challenges faced by women and children in conflict-affected regions, Shama Obaed called on the international community to bridge widening humanitarian funding gaps. She also urged sustained global support for the safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

As part of her visit, the State Minister is scheduled to participate in a high-level panel discussion at the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment on June 18. She will also lead the Bangladesh delegation in a bilateral meeting with Sima Bahous, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, to discuss issues related to gender equality, women’s empowerment, and humanitarian cooperation.
