BRAC has certified 10 women as professional drivers after they successfully completed an intensive training programme, marking another step towards increasing women’s participation in Bangladesh’s transport sector.
The certificates were awarded at an event titled “Women Behind the Wheel: Celebrating Achievement, Advancing Road Safety and Inclusive Transport” held at the BRAC Centre in Dhaka.
Speaking as chief guest, State Minister for Railways and Road Transport Habibur Rashid said the government is creating new employment opportunities for women through professional driver training, women-only bus services and easier access to driving licences. He praised BRAC’s role in promoting road safety and women’s empowerment.
The newly certified drivers completed a three-month residential course covering practical and theoretical driving, English communication, gender awareness and safeguarding, followed by a three-month apprenticeship. BRAC Driving School has so far trained 159 women as professional drivers.
BRTA Chairman Mohammad Habibur Rahman assured continued support to make the licensing process more women-friendly, while BRAC Enterprises Managing Director Tamara Hasan Abed stressed the need to create more employment opportunities for skilled women drivers both at home and abroad.
Since its launch in 2001, BRAC’s Road Safety Programme has trained thousands of drivers and worked to improve road safety, promote inclusive transport and prevent harassment in public transportation.
