Bangladesh Seeks Greater UNDP Support for Climate Finance, LDC Transition

NEW YORK, June 10, 2026

Bangladesh has called on the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to enhance its support in strengthening climate resilience, improving access to international climate financing, and ensuring a smooth graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.

Speaking at the Annual Session of the Executive Board of UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, reaffirmed Dhaka’s commitment to working closely with UNDP under its Strategic Plan for 2026–2029.

The ambassador highlighted Bangladesh’s recent national elections and expressed appreciation for UNDP’s support through the BALLOT Project, which contributed to facilitating voter participation and strengthening democratic processes.

Emphasizing Bangladesh’s vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, he urged UNDP to expand technical and institutional assistance to help the country access global climate financing mechanisms. He specifically called for greater support in mobilizing resources from major international funds, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The envoy noted that adequate climate financing remains critical for Bangladesh as it continues to face increasing risks from extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and other climate-related challenges.

He also stressed the importance of international cooperation in supporting Bangladesh’s upcoming graduation from the LDC category, ensuring that development gains are sustained and economic progress remains on track.

Bangladesh’s appeal comes as developing countries continue to seek greater access to climate funds and stronger international partnerships to address the growing challenges posed by climate change and sustainable development.
