Bangladesh, India Swap Fishermen and Boats in Bay of Bengal Operation

SS Report

Dhaka, 9 December 2025:

Bangladesh and India today completed the reciprocal repatriation of fishermen detained in each other’s waters, marking a coordinated humanitarian and consular effort between the two neighbouring countries.

This afternoon, the Bangladesh Coast Guard received 32 Bangladeshi fishermen from the Indian Coast Guard and handed over 47 Indian fishermen in return at the International Maritime Boundary Line in the Bay of Bengal. Alongside the repatriation, one Bangladesh-owned fishing boat was returned by India, while Bangladesh handed over three India-owned vessels.

In a parallel development, six Bangladeshi fishermen detained in Meghalaya, India are scheduled to be repatriated through the Nakugaon Land Port in Sherpur district under the supervision of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Both BGB and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) are coordinating to ensure their safe return.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the repatriation was carried out through the joint efforts of several agencies, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Ministry of Shipping, Bangladesh Coast Guard, BGB, Bangladesh Police, local administrations and other relevant bodies.

Officials said the coordinated operation reflects the commitment of both Bangladesh and India to resolving maritime and border detentions through cooperation and timely humanitarian action.
