BRAC Opens Greenpak Factory to Boost Eco-Friendly Packaging in Bangladesh

DHAKA, July 7, 2026:

BRAC Enterprises has inaugurated its Greenpak factory in Gazipur’s Tongi Industrial Area, introducing a new milestone in Bangladesh’s efforts to reduce plastic pollution through biodegradable packaging.

The factory, inaugurated on Tuesday by BRAC Enterprises Managing Director Tamara Hasan Abed, is designed to produce environmentally friendly packaging that naturally decomposes within six months, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic that can take up to 500 years to break down.

Speaking at the inauguration, Tamara Hasan Abed said Greenpak reflects BRAC’s commitment to responsible business, innovation and environmental sustainability. She noted that the initiative aims to curb plastic pollution while contributing to a cleaner and greener Bangladesh.

Currently producing 12 to 15 metric tonnes of biodegradable packaging each month, the factory is expected to reach an annual production capacity of 300 to 350 metric tonnes. At full operation, it will replace an equivalent volume of conventional plastic packaging every year, significantly reducing plastic waste.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by BRAC Chief Financial Officer Sabbir Ahmed, Senior Director of BRAC Enterprises Mohammad Anisur Rahman, and other senior officials.

The initiative comes as global plastic production exceeds 400 million metric tonnes annually, with packaging accounting for nearly 40 percent of total plastic use, underscoring the need for sustainable alternatives.
