DCAB Hails Khalilur’s UNGA Victory as Diplomatic Milestone

DHAKA, June 10, 2026 — The Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) has congratulated Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), describing the achievement as a landmark moment for Bangladesh’s diplomacy.

In a statement issued on Tuesday night, DCAB President AKM Moinuddin and General Secretary Emrul Kayesh said the victory reflects the international community’s growing confidence in Bangladesh’s constructive role in global affairs.

They noted that Bangladesh secured a significant diplomatic success by winning the election despite having only around three months to campaign. Dr. Khalilur Rahman received 99 votes from the 193-member UN body, defeating the candidate from Cyprus, who secured 91 votes.

According to the DCAB leaders, the outcome demonstrates Bangladesh’s increasing diplomatic influence and global acceptability on the international stage.

“This is a historic and proud moment for the nation,” the statement said, adding that the election has further enhanced Bangladesh’s image and standing within the global community.

The association expressed confidence that under Dr. Rahman’s leadership, the UN General Assembly will continue to advance key global priorities, including multilateralism, international peace and security, sustainable development, and stronger international cooperation.

DCAB leaders also wished the foreign minister success in carrying out his responsibilities in one of the most prestigious leadership positions within the United Nations system.

The election marks a notable achievement for Bangladesh’s foreign policy and underscores the country’s growing engagement in addressing global challenges through multilateral diplomacy.
