U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen visited Chattogram Port on January 26, 2026, to mark the arrival of a major shipment of U.S. wheat, underscoring growing commercial cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States.
The ambassador joined Chattogram Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral S. M. Moniruzzaman and Secretary of Food Md. Firoz Sarker as nearly 60,000 metric tons of high-quality U.S. wheat arrived at the port. The consignment is part of a larger shipment exceeding 173,000 metric tons, including soft white wheat from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, and hard red winter wheat from Montana and Nebraska.
U.S. Embassy officials said the deliveries represent a critical supply of nutritious, high-protein grain for Bangladesh, which produces only about 13 percent of its annual wheat consumption domestically. The shipments also highlight Bangladesh’s emergence as a key market for U.S. agricultural exports.
In July 2025, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Food signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Wheat Association to purchase up to 700,000 metric tons of U.S. wheat annually through 2030. Under the agreement, Bangladesh has already purchased around 660,000 metric tons, with more than 350,000 metric tons delivered so far.
