DHAKA, March 3, 2026:
A national seminar held in Dhaka on Monday discussed plans to introduce a PhD programme in nursing in Bangladesh as part of efforts to strengthen leadership, research, and advanced training in the country’s healthcare sector.
The “2026 Nursing Development Seminar” took place at a hotel in the capital’s Gulshan area under the theme “Advancing Doctoral Nursing Education in Bangladesh: Strengthening Leadership, Research, and Health System.” About 100 nurses, academics and stakeholders from across the country attended the event.
The seminar was organised under the Capacity Building Project for Graduate Education and Research in Nursing in Bangladesh (2025–2029), supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Participants discussed policy directions and institutional strategies for launching a doctoral-level nursing programme in Bangladesh, aiming to enhance the country’s capacity in nursing research, education and health system leadership.
Organisers also presented updates on the progress of the KOICA-supported project and shared findings from a needs assessment on establishing a PhD programme in nursing. Speakers reviewed global trends in doctoral nursing education and examined opportunities for adapting such models in Bangladesh.
Discussions also highlighted the achievements of the master’s programme at the National Institute of Advanced Nursing Education and Research (NIANER), along with its future development plans.
Senior officials from key government institutions and nursing bodies joined the seminar, where they stressed the importance of policy collaboration to advance higher nursing education.
The event is expected to help build policy consensus on strengthening nursing education and research in Bangladesh and lay the groundwork for producing doctoral-level nursing professionals to support the country’s growing healthcare demands.
