EU Observers Hail Bangladesh Polls as Credible Democratic Milestone

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has described Bangladesh’s 12 February parliamentary elections as credible and well managed, marking what it called a pivotal step toward restoring democratic governance and the rule of law.

Presenting the mission’s preliminary findings in Dhaka, Chief Observer Ivars Ijabs said the elections were “genuinely competitive,” with fundamental freedoms broadly respected. He noted that the electoral legal framework largely aligns with international standards and commended the Bangladesh Election Commission for working independently and transparently, maintaining stakeholder confidence.

The delegation of the European Parliament, led by Tomáš Zdechovský, endorsed the statement. Zdechovský urged the newly elected parliament and government to implement approved reforms, calling the post-election period a crucial new phase for the country.

Observers reported that election day was orderly, festive and calm, with poll workers efficiently managing voting and counting. The presence of party agents and regular updates on results by returning officers and media outlets enhanced transparency. However, the mission noted that independent participation for persons with disabilities was not always ensured.

Ijabs also expressed concern over limited political space for women, sporadic localized violence, and disinformation-fueled mob threats. He highlighted the continued underrepresentation of indigenous communities and minorities, stressing the need for stronger accountability, inclusive participation, and respect for human rights.

The EU EOM deployed 223 international observers across all 64 districts and will issue a final report with recommendations in the coming months.
