New York, 29 January 2026 — Bangladesh has been elected as Vice-Chair of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for the year 2026, reaffirming its longstanding commitment to global peace and post-conflict recovery. The election took place on Thursday at the UN Headquarters in New York during the Commission’s first meeting of its 20th session.
At the meeting, Morocco was elected Chair of the five-member PBC Bureau, while Germany, Brazil, Croatia, and Bangladesh were chosen as Vice-Chairs. Bangladesh formally assumed its responsibilities as Vice-Chair following a brief ceremony held after the election.
The UN Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body that supports peacebuilding and sustaining peace efforts in conflict-affected countries. It is composed of 31 member states drawn from the UN General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, and the leading troop- and financial-contributing countries to the UN system.
Bangladesh has been a member of the Commission since its inception in 2005. Over the years, it has played an active role, serving as Chair in 2012 and as Vice-Chair in 2013 and 2023.
The President of the UN General Assembly and the Chef de Cabinet, representing the UN Secretary-General, attended the ceremony and delivered statements highlighting the important role of the PBC. In its statement, the Bangladesh delegation expressed gratitude for the confidence shown by member states and reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing the UN’s peacebuilding agenda and future initiatives.
