Bangladesh Eyes Global Semiconductor Leap

Experts have stressed the need for closer collaboration between industry and academia to position Bangladesh as a competitive player in the global semiconductor sector. Despite having a large pool of talented students, speakers noted that the lack of practical skills, modern laboratories, research funding, and experienced faculty remains a major barrier.

These views were shared at a panel discussion titled “Bangladesh’s Position in the Global Semiconductor and Deep-Tech Value Chain: From Consumer to Producer”, held on Thursday at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre. The session brought together representatives from academia, industry, government, and global technology firms.

Panelists highlighted the importance of university-led research, industry-oriented curricula, long-term internships, and cross-disciplinary training to build an effective semiconductor ecosystem. Emphasis was also placed on big-tech-friendly policies, foreign investment, and confidence in addressing emerging challenges such as AI packaging and digital twin technologies.

Speakers from the Bangladesh Semiconductor Industry Association, BUET, BRAC University, BIDA, Huawei South Asia, and tech entrepreneurs underscored that while Bangladesh currently lags behind regional peers, targeted policy support, joint industry–academic initiatives, and global partnerships could unlock significant opportunities in semiconductor design, packaging, testing, and workforce development.
