SS Report
Dhaka, December 2025:
The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed deep concern over the killing of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a prominent leader of Bangladesh’s 2024 protest movement, urging authorities and the public to refrain from violence and ensure accountability.
In a statement issued by UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Jeremy Laurence, the UN said it was “deeply troubled” by Hadi’s death. He succumbed to his injuries six days after being shot last week, triggering protests in several parts of the country.
Following the announcement of his death, demonstrations reportedly erupted at multiple locations, with incidents of arson and vandalism. The UN Human Rights Office also noted reports that several journalists were assaulted amid the unrest, raising concerns about press freedom and public safety.
The UN called on Bangladeshi authorities to conduct a prompt, impartial, thorough, and transparent investigation into the attack that led to Hadi’s death and to ensure due process and accountability for those responsible. It warned that retaliation and revenge would only deepen divisions and undermine the rights of all citizens.
With parliamentary elections scheduled for February, the UN stressed the importance of maintaining an environment in which people can safely and peacefully participate in public life and freely express diverse views. The authorities were urged to uphold the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and the protection of journalists, and to take steps to prevent further escalation of unrest during this critical pre-election period.
