NAM Summit: Bangladesh Pushes for Reform, Youth Empowerment, and Justice

SS Report

15 October 2025, Kampala:

Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain has called for greater unity and institutional reform within the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to effectively address the shared vulnerabilities of member states.

Speaking at the plenary of the 19th Mid-Term Ministerial Conference of NAM in Kampala, Uganda, Mr. Hossain emphasized the need for streamlined decision-making processes to revitalize the Movement’s core ideals of equality, solidarity, and justice.

“At a time when we are discussing reforms across the United Nations, we should also consider streamlining NAM’s decision-making process to re-energize the Movement’s unity,” he said.

Referring to recent political developments in Bangladesh, Mr. Hossain highlighted the country’s renewed commitment to institutional reform, human rights, and accountability, following last year’s mass uprising. He stressed the importance of investing in youth and women to build a resilient and prosperous nation.

Later in the day, Mr. Hossain attended the NAM Ministerial Committee meeting on Palestine, reaffirming Bangladesh’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. He welcomed the recent ceasefire in Gaza and reiterated support for a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

Mr. Hossain also raised the ongoing humanitarian burden Bangladesh bears in hosting over a million Rohingya refugees, urging global support for their safe and dignified repatriation to Myanmar.

On the sidelines of the conference, Bangladesh and Uganda signed an agreement to launch regular Foreign Office Consultations, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The NAM Conference concludes on 16 October with adoption of political and ministerial declarations.
