Bangladesh Steps Up Efforts to Protect Ozone Layer under Kigali Amendment

SS Report

Dhaka, August 7, 2025

Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to phasing down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, aiming for an 85% reduction in HFC consumption by 2045.

This pledge was emphasized during a national consultation workshop titled “Advancing the Montreal Protocol in Bangladesh: Fostering Stakeholder Collaboration”, held at the Department of Environment. The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and UNDP under the “Renewal of Institutional Strengthening for Phase-out of ODS (Phase-X)” project.

Government officials, industry leaders, academics, and development partners gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities of reducing HFCs—potent greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

Md. Mahiuddin Manik, National Project Director, presented the country’s roadmap toward meeting Kigali targets. Additional Secretary Md. Khayrul Hasan emphasized the importance of multi-sector partnerships, while Sonali Dayaratne of UNDP reaffirmed the organization’s support for Bangladesh’s climate and ozone goals.

Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, Director General of the Department of Environment, highlighted the need for coordinated action aligned with national and global priorities.

The workshop spotlighted the Kigali Implementation Plan, sectoral readiness, technological innovation, and private sector engagement. Bangladesh’s achievements in phasing out ozone-depleting substances and its progress in technology transfer and institutional capacity-building were recognized.

With ongoing support from UNDP and the Multilateral Fund, Bangladesh continues to lead in creating a climate-resilient, ozone-safe future through sustainable cooling and environmentally friendly practices.
