Dhaka, 29 July 2025:
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, has expressed hope that Bangladesh’s upcoming national election will be free, fair, and inclusive, with the participation of all registered political parties.
Speaking at the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Bangladesh ‘DCAB Talk’ the ambassador reaffirmed China’s commitment to being a reliable partner of Bangladesh, especially during times of crisis.
Ambassador Yao addressed a wide range of bilateral and regional issues, including the Rohingya crisis, Teesta River project, economic and military cooperation, and recent U.S. tariff policies.
He confirmed that due to previous constraints, China had not been able to maintain active engagement with parties like BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, but that situation has now changed.
“We believe now is the time to improve our relations with all political parties, including BNP and Jamaat,” Yao said.
He reiterated that China does not interfere in internal affairs but supports democratic processes. “As a true friend of Bangladesh, we hope for a participatory and credible election,” he added.
On the Rohingya issue, the ambassador stressed that while tripartite efforts have been made, repatriation is not yet possible due to ongoing conflict in Myanmar. “China continues to advocate dialogue over sanctions. Peace must come first,” he said.
Regarding the Teesta project, Yao stated that China is willing to assist if Bangladesh formally seeks support.
On U.S. tariffs and sanctions, he criticized the unilateral approach, saying it undermines the WTO and regional stability. “We will deal with such policies in our own way,” he added.
Ambassador Yao also called for stronger people-to-people ties, citing a significant rise in Chinese companies operating in Bangladesh and increased medical cooperation.
“China wants to be a good friend and a good partner to Bangladesh,” he concluded.
