As Bangladesh’s coastal communities continue to suffer the harsh impacts of climate change, a powerful event titled “Lives on the Edge of Climate Change: Struggle, Hope and the Future” was held today at DrikPath Bhobon, Panthapath, calling for urgent, inclusive climate action.
Jointly organized by Oxfam in Bangladesh, Breaking the Silence (BTS), and Drik Picture Library, the event featured a policy dialogue, photobook and exhibition launch, and a report on 49 coastal development projects. It amplified the experiences of communities facing rising seas, floods, river erosion, and salinity—despite contributing less than 0.56% to global emissions.
Doulatunessa, from Shyamnagar, shared:
“We rebuild after every flood, moving from one side of the river to the other. What frightens me is the future—will my grandchildren carry this same burden?”
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser at the Ministry of Environment, said:
“These are not just local tragedies but global injustices. We must act with urgency and empathy.”
Speakers including Ashish Damle (Oxfam), Tasmima Hossain (BTS), Dr Shahidul Alam (Drik), and Jacob De Leon (Australian High Commission) called for stronger policies rooted in community voices. The session was moderated by Md Sariful Islam of Oxfam.
